Container Cups
Silhouettes of packaging from our mass culture decorate my Lady Cups. I was pondering how my vessels fit in the culture. I remember telling my teacher that I thought no-one would use my high concept vessels.
My teacher supplied an epiphany: She told me that at a craft college on the East coast, clay students were offered four choices of emphasis: sculpture, tile making, functional pottery or working in an area called “vessel as symbol.” I said “Oh that ’s what I am: vessel as symbol!”Liberation!
