Tulipieres are tiered vessels that have spouts and holes for holding the flowers in place. It’s a good method for simpler vessels as well.

Vessels for Flowers

My most satisfying functional vessels are for flowers. So fun to use!.

Leech basin: Given my interest in words on vessels, I was riveted when I saw the pedestaled leech basin Lewis and Clark carried with them on their expedition. I immediately began a contemporary version, modified for flowers — but with the leech label.

Ganeshiere: Invited to create a tulipiere for a show, I sought the least labor-intensive approach. Why not spoof the multi-tiered vessels by drawing attention to the flower stems usually concealed by tulipieres? Why not use ready-made glass cylinders? I could make a tiered effect by creating ceramic lids as spacers. For interest, I planned on putting ready-made figurines inside the glass containers. I was surprised when my Ganesh figures from India began to dissolve when placed in water. Via the internet, I learned that after the Ganesh celebrations, clay Ganeshes are thrown in water to dissolve! So for the purpose of this project, I had to make terra cotta replicas.
