 One evening I was reading about ceramic history on an internet site that provided only text, no pictures.  The entry that caught my attention provided a vivid written description of ancient Chinese court life, where the elites of society delighted in “nose drinking” -- ingesting water through the nose, using special flower shaped cups.

A later entry on the internet site revealed a mis-translation: there were never nose drinking cups. The Chinese call the area on a vessel where the spout comes out “the nose” of the vessel. The ancient text was probably referring to a kendi, an ancient vessel where people drank from the spout.

I illustrated this misinterpretation. I put quotations from the internet site on the base platform. I made a kendi and invented a version of a nose drinking vessel. Next >
