Submit Slides

In this installation, three white unglazed vessels sit-in a blaze of light on a wall-mounted light box. The installation speaks to that universal experience of ceramic artists: staring at unglazed vessels, imagining the final image. Will the pre-visualization provide the desired result?

Each vessel has a slide propped in front of it. (Slides were still being used in 2001.) The slides were shot with colored filters, making the vessel appear in the image as if it were bright green, yellow, or red — as if the vessel was glazed.

Ultimately, the photograph may be the work’s final context —the defining way that a majority of viewers will know and judge the work. Once again: image and object and the gap between.
